This new barn in Bedford Hills, NY feels like it has been part of the landscape for a long time. Built into a hillside, the lower level is accessible from the back and houses the owner’s car collection. The main level has large doors on three sides. To create an open interior with no columns, two timber trusses span the full length of the building. A timber frame with mortise and tendon joinery, tongue and grooved ceilings and wide plank salvaged flooring imbue the space with a rich textured atmosphere.
Materials are natural: stone foundations, re-claimed barn-board siding, standing seam copper roofs. Like the landscape it sits within, its exterior finish will continue to weather and patina over time.
Distinguishing this from older barns, it is designed for year round comfort. It is fully insulated, with radiant floor heating on all levels. A barn door opens from the western side at the tennis court and reveals a larger opening facing east. The east facing door is made of large insulated glass panels so that valley views are maintained during winter months, and so daylight can still fill the space on the coldest winter days.
